The Art of a Beautiful Body
VASER LipoSelection® is a 3rd generation power-assisted liposuction technique. It is called LipoSelection because it uses ultrasonic waves to selectively break up fat deposits leaving blood vessels, nerves and muscles relatively intact. The broken up fat deposits are much easier to suck out. As such, VASER is both a gentle and powerful form of power-assisted liposuction.
THE VASER PROCEDURE
Under local anaesthesia injected into the skin, small incisions are made strategically (usually along creases that conceal the scar) and the VASER probe is inserted under the skin into the fat layer. The ultrasonic waves from the VASER probe loosens up the fats selectively. After this, a hollow tube attached to a suction pump, is inserted under the skin to drain out the loosened fats.
During the VASER procedure, there is no pain. After the anaesthesia has worn off, it sometimes feels like the aches and pains that follow a vigorous workout. This is unlike in traditional liposuction, where patients have reported feels like as if a truck was driven over the body. The bruises too are less with VASER.
Compression garments are applied after the surgery and patients go home to rest.
Follow-ups are very important. At one week, we will commence on a session of radiofrequency to massage away the swelling. At one month post-operation, we will discuss the results with our patients. More radiofrequency may be done at this time.
HOW IS VASER LESS TRAUMATIC?
Non-power assisted liposuction uses both the suction power and the surgeon's elbow-strength to pull out chunks of fat. Often, nerves, blood vessels and even muscle fibers are pulled out as well.
With VASER, fat deposits are broken up first before suction is applied. By loosening the fat cells, VASER allows large deposits of fats to be removed easily. This significantly reduces trauma to the surrounding tissues. Which means there are less bruises, swelling and post-operative discomfort as compared with conventional liposuction. In fact, when you look at the bottle containing the aspirated fat after the procedure, more than 2/3 is usually pure fat. Only a small amount at the bottom is blood and fluid.
Because it is this gentle, the treated areas also look smoother (less lumpiness) and tighter than with conventional liposuction.

TREATMENT AREAS
Any areas and areas of any size can be treated with VASER. The limitation is not with size but with the amount of tumescent anaesthesia that we can safely use in one session. This is calculated based on body weight.
Male Breasts
Self-conscious men, good news. This area, whether breast tissue is present or not, can be reduced very effectively using VASER. Skin generally retracts well in men. As such, there is seldom any loose skin after VASER for psuedo-gynacomastia.
Dangling Skin Under Arms
Our main aim here is to create some adhesion of the skin to the arm muscles beneath after the fat is removed. In that way, the skin will feel tight and not dangle anymore. We routinely apply high-definition techniques to VASER of the fatter arms so that it looks like a gym-sculpted arms.
Saddle Bags
These are the bulges on the side of the thighs of some women - especially after child bearing. They reduce very well using VASER. Not only are the saddle bags reduced, very often the buttock becomes tighter and smaller. This is probably the most rewarding site for our female patients.
The Belly
The belly and the love handles can be reduced very well in most cases. Exceptions being those with very lax skin after multiple childbirths or in very old patients. Then a tummy tuck may be needed.

RECOVERY- TIME DEPENDS ON EXTENT OF VASER
The main discomfort is like the aches after a vigorous workout. When small areas like the abdomen-only or arms-only are treated with VASER, some of these patients even return to work the next day. It is almost like a "lunchtime Liposuction". Of course we normally advise a few days of rest.
When more areas are treated, like combination of abdomen-front / abdomen-sides / thighs, patients is able go out to the supermarket the next day and return to work within 3 days. A week's rest is usually advised.
Immediately
Imagine going under the skin and yanking out 1L of fat. There is bound to be some swelling. As such the area may appear the same size or sometimes slightly larger. But patients will know by pinching the areas that fat deposits have reduced. Swelling feels very different from fat.
One week later
Swelling would have decreased slightly, but we will apply radiofrequency to the areas and the swelling will disappear very quickly. This is also the time we remove stitches, if any.
One months later
It is only after one month or more that the "healing-tissues" fully reorganize back to the feeling of normal skin. The overlying skin contracts such that often stretch marks and loose skin appears less obvious.
Three months on
It would be very hard to find the insertion points or tell by looking at the skin that any liposuction has ever been done. Skin feels like normal skin again.
SAFETY
VASER is generally considered to be safer than conventional liposuction because there is less bleeding. The fact that we do the procedure under tumescent technique eliminates a lot of risks normally associated with general anaesthesia.
